Cardboard City at Rediscover Center is a hands-on creative experience where kids and families transform cardboard into an imaginative cityscape using real tools, recycled materials, and endless creativity. Cardboard City invites young makers to build large-scale structures, vehicles, animals, and anything else they can dream up, entirely from cardboard! Perfect for ages 4 and up, this interactive exhibit fosters problem-solving, collaboration, and artistic expression in a fun, safe, and friendly environment. Cardboard City 2024
In 2024 Cardboard City took place at Rediscover Mid City where families were able to participate in this immersive experience free of charge. We were able to reach 5,000 participants over the course of several weeks and create incredible cardboard feats of engineering, craftsmanship, and innovation.
Cardboard City 2023
For its third year, Rediscover Cardboard City hosted its annual pop-up art center produced by Rediscover Center. With massive cardboard art installations, skills building classes, cardboard art exhibits, workshops, weekly artist residencies, and hands-on activities, Rediscover Cardboard City became LA's best family friendly destination! 10,000 visitors and makers came together to view works by LA-based artists, chat with artists-in-residence, and make cardboard creations imaginative and wild. The 2023 installation was made part in possible by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Cardboard City 2022
Following its initial success, Cardboard City found a new home at Westfield Century City, thanks to a generous partnership that provided space for Rediscover Center to expand its artistic vision. This collaboration allowed Rediscover to continue inspiring families and artists alike, fostering a vibrant environment where imagination and eco-consciousness thrived.
Cardboard City 2021
In 2021, reDiscover Center launched the inaugural Cardboard City, a groundbreaking pop-up art experience that captivated the Los Angeles community. Situated in a 10,000-square-foot space on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade, this innovative installation transformed everyday cardboard into large-scale sculptures, interactive exhibits, and hands-on crafting zones. Over its two-month run, Cardboard City welcomed 16,000 visitors, offering free admission and engaging activities that celebrated creativity, sustainability, and community involvement.

Rediscover Cardboard City is always free and open to all visitors. Start your visit with a tour of the Rediscover Cardboard City exhibits. View inspirational cardboard art from LA artists, add to one of our collective art installations under the guidance of our Artists-in-Residence, or join a Cardboard Crafting session. Be sure to come back throughout the summer as our artists-in-residence create new works each week, incorporating elements created by you and other Rediscover Cardboard City participants.
The legendary Cardboard Regatta Dragon Boat is ready to set sail as Cardboard City returns to Los Angeles this summer. Experience the magic of massive cardboard sculptures, hands-on workshops, and a community of makers at immersive pop-up art events throughout LA. Join the creative voyage and be part of the cardboard revolution!
The birth of Cardboard City was a unique opportunity to sustainably bolster the circle of life! With creative freedom and recycled materials at their disposal, artists from across Los Angeles gathered together with Rediscover Center to create larger than life creations out of cardboard.

Halloween Pop-up Artist-in-Residence German Diaz has a spooky vision for transforming Cardboard City into Halloween Central. Come help him make it possible! Cardboard City's Artist-in-Residence program connects you with working artists who do amazing things with cardboard. Have you ever wanted to watch an artist create, talk to them about their process, or collaborate with them on their creation? At the Artist-in-Residence Studio you’ll be able to do exactly that.
Craft Zone at Rediscover Cardboard City
Cardboard Makerspace
Get inspired and make a project of your own in our Cardboard Makerspace. Experience the hands-on fun of transforming simple cardboard into cool creations. Rediscover has searched the world for the best cardboard tools that are kid-friendly and versatile. Come with an idea of something you want to make or be guided by our Teaching Artists to create a project like a hat, figurine, or architectural model. Suggested donation $5-20 per person based on the size of your project.
Halloween Pop-up: Cardboard City Facilitators will be ready to help you with Halloween-themed projects like masks, costume accessories, trick-or-treat baskets, or decorations. Think bats, cats, fangs, and horns!
Rediscover Cardboard City Shop
No visit to Rediscover Cardboard City is complete without a stop in the Rediscover Cardboard City Shop. Here you will find cardboard sculptures, kits, and the tools and materials to make your home into a mini-Cardboard City, packed full of your family's imagination!

Volunteer
At Cardboard City, we have individual and group volunteering opportunities daily through July and August. Volunteers who sign up for a regular schedule receive additional training in using tools and teaching hands-on STEAM programs. We love our volunteers!
