Meet the Facilitator: Kevin Garcia

Kevin Garcia is the Office Coordinator at Rediscover Center.

While he is not a teaching facilitator at our camps, makerspace or school programs, he is a wonderful part of the Rediscover Center team and amazing influence to the kids in our spaces. Kevin keeps the office organized between Rediscover Venice and Mid City. If you’ve called the Rediscover phone number in the past, you may have had the pleasure of speaking with Kevin! He knows Rediscover inside and out, taking care of site opening and closing, walking the kids to and from the park at lunch time on camp weeks, curating facilitator schedule for our programming, and so much more.

Kevin experiences a plethora of programs at Rediscover and the kids know him as the “cool and reliable grown up”! His exposure allows him to work with all kinds of makers at Rediscover: “My favorite part of working at Rediscover is the high diversity among the people we work with! Be it the diversity in cultural backgrounds, movements, mobility, ages, identities, orientations, and cognition; art and building are impactful forms of expression for everyone and to be able to do my little part to assist in making that creative equity a reality is an absolute pleasure and a treasure!”

We asked Kevin (since he gets to answer the phone most days!) what programs he recommends to people when they inquire with the desire to start their own #maker journeys:

“For anyone 7 or older, I would always recommend our Tool Training programs at both locations. It's an awesome way to get started in building with wood in an instructive and hands on way, and often is the beginning spark of a lifelong journey in building for folks of all ages. I also have got to shout out our ongoing Girls Build series for all female-identifying, femme-presenting, and non-binary friends looking to start learning power tools and woodworking; Our staff have done an OUTSTANDING job of cultivating an environment that is both informative, affirming, and fun!”

Kevin’s favorite tool at Rediscover Center is the bandsaw: “While still a beginner-friendly tool, its usage requires a higher degree of safety precautions and care that I find fun and rewarding, not to mention there is just a cathartic joy to be found in the way it saws through the wood! I also enjoy that, despite the fact it does utilize electricity, it is an extremely ‘analogue-feeling’ tool that you can easily open it up and see its relatively intuitive inner workings.”
