Guillermo is a Lead Facilitator at Rediscover Center who joined the organization in summer 2019.

Six years ago, Guillermo first stumbled upon the makerspace in Venice; an area he grew up around.

As a young artist himself, Rediscover appealed to him because he wanted an outlet to express himself and he adored the creative environment and individuality that Rediscover fostered with youth in Los Angeles. Nineteen-year old Guillermo was interested in learning how to be an educator in an open-ended, process-based environment, and for an organization that fosters and embraces teaching artists of diverse backgrounds, and Rediscover’s facilitators inspired Guillermo to grow as a leader: 

“My experience in art and expression has helped me connect with kids of all kinds, and overall, my goal was to be able to reach the kids on a personal level because it's really important for kids to feel heard and seen. I have been able to build very strong connections with kids throughout the years and it always warms my heart when kids remind me of all the big builds we have done together. I have to give credit to the other facilitators, particularly Nico Palermo. Nico was someone who took me under his wing, and gave me confidence and the freedom to explore my own ways of teaching. I'm forever grateful for him.”

The kids know him as the beloved “Mr. G” and inspire him everyday! He is often requested at school programs, Tinkering Open Studio, and at Tinkering Camp.  Guillermo loves watching the kids develop their skills at Rediscover. He recognizes our repeat tinkerers and challenges them to get better at operating tools a little more each time they come back. There’s a phenomenon that happens at Rediscover’s makerspaces: “Kids come in shy at first, but over time, break out of their shell. They BLOOM with builds at Rediscover, and it’s a wonderful thing to witness.”

Guillermo’s favorite tool is the handsaw! The kids know Mr. G as the fastest saw-er in the galaxy: “I love it because the power is in your hands (literally) and you’re the one doing the work.”

Apart from being a really cool teacher, Guillermo is an artist, a musician, film fanatic and future screenplay writer.  When it’s time to hydrate at the space, he says his catchphrase, “It’s a hot one!”
