Home School Classes

We can easily design a custom curriculum for a multi-session class, or one off workshop for your home school group.  Feel free to peruse our public offerings and traditional in school programs to select what you like, or chat with us about some other themes you are interested in.  (We love designing curriculum).  Contact us to work out details:  pasadena@rediscovercenter.org

We can run home school classes for groups of 8 students or more.  (We can do smaller groups, but the pricing gets to be unpleasant).  Pricing will depend on the class materials and number of instructors required.  We maintain a 1:4 staff to student ratio for all of our "tinkering" classes for safety, and to make the experience very personalized.  If you can provide volunteers to help during class, then prices go down significantly.

We currently run home school classes through Home School Coaches who are kind enough to help us with home school charter billing.

Learn new tools, new mechanisms, and build something truly creative.  Students will learn (or review) how to safely use the power drill, hand-saws, and sewing machine.  We’ll learn different mechanical elements (like crank shafts, pulleys, cams, and gears) to build automata.  Students will apply their knowledge to build their own unique automata, and a  final project that may involve wacky mini-golf.  This class covers the engineering design process, prototyping, mechanisms, and safe tool usage, with a focus on creativity and open ended problem solving.  The class ends with a presentation of student work.  (No prerequisites required).
Non-charter fee:  $240/student.  $230 for each additional sibling
With homeschool charter:  $280/student (no sibling discount).  Email HSC for payment.

Art, Tinkering, & Invention—Designing Toys
in partnership with Home School Coaches
8 weeks, on Fridays:  Jan 27-Mar. 24

Art & Tinkering & Invention 1--Designing Toys. (Grades 1-6)
Become your own inventor and explore new ways of making things in this hands-on creative class.  In this empowering series, kids will learn the basics of engineering design, how everyday things work, iterative design (most things don't work the first time), and safe tool usage in a supportive environment.  We will apply these new skills to design toys and games.   To get ideas, we'll take apart small appliances and old toys to see how they work. Students will learn safe usage of hand tools, power drill, hand saws, the sewing machine, and glue gun.  The class ends with a presentation/performance of student work on the last day. This is a great workshop for learning open ended problem solving, being creative, and developing mechanical intuition, essentials for a future in STEM or art.
