Make amazing things with us, every day! Tinkering Club is an open studio for independent tinkering. Part of reDiscover Center’s Tinkering School LA, Tinkering Club provides real tools and real materials. Our staff and volunteers create a safe environment for tinkering, as well as training and support in design, prototyping, construction techniques, and presentation. Tinkering Club is for ages 7+. Adults are welcome too!  No one with open toed shoes, loose hair or clothing will be allowed in the shop.

Tool Safety Training

This two hour workshop provides training on our safety-oriented Tinkering Mindset and the specific tools used in Tinkering Club. Learn how to properly use safety equipment like eye, dust, and hearing protection. Learn the safe operation of clamps, hand drills, hand saws, jig saw, and chop saw. This class concludes with a safety assessment required for participation in Tinkering Club.

Tinkering Club

After you’ve mastered safe tool use, you can start planning and building your own creations! We don’t believe in giving you step-by-step instructions, we want you to be able to make your own design. This is a skill that not only will help you all through your life, it’s fun! reDiscover Facilitators are on hand to advise tinkerers at every stage of design, construction, and tinker-y reconstruction if anyone gets stuck.

Sometimes, our tinkerers need some extra time to finish their projects, and in particular it’s not uncommon for you not to finish a project on your first visit to Tinkering Club. That’s great! It means you have huge ideas bursting out of your head. The shelves along the front windows are there for in-progress projects. Just write your name and the date on it, and you can leave your project here for up to three weeks to keep working on it.

One of the best things about building stuff at reDiscover Center is that you’re building it yourself. We don’t build anything for you, we help you get good at doing these things on your own. The best days are when there are a dozen tinkerers making a dozen different projects at the same time; you can inspire each other, help each other, encourage each other. The facilitators are here for safety, to keep Tinkering Club fully stocked and operational, and  to help you out at getting good at doing it on your own. This way, when you go home, you can build all kinds of things with whatever you have on hand!

We have volunteer opportunities for parents, in and out of the shop. We love volunteers!  Sign up to volunteer online or talk to any reDiscover staff member.

Since 2004, reDiscover Center has worked with local businesses to divert scrap, overstock, and other materials from the trash stream and use them in art, environmental education, and tinkering programs. Basically, we have a huge pile of junk and we know what to do with it. Tinkerers in our programs make everything from wood scrap sculptures to life size super heroes, working go carts, and 8 foot tall art machines.

Tinkering Club is made possible with generous support from the Goldhirsh-Yellin Foundation.

For tinkerers and artists ages 6 and under (and all ages!), please consider reDiscover’s Crafting Corner program, available during the Center’s open hours.
