reDiscover Center launched Tinkering School L.A. in 2011 with training from Gever Tulley, a borrowed corner of a warehouse, and two weeks of tinkering with around a dozen kids. They made amazing projects and developed deep skills and the confidence to build. We learned there was a hunger in L.A. for Tinkering. Tinkering School L.A. grew slowly for the first few years as we figured out how to capture and repeat that magic, while the word spread throughout L.A. that something special was happening in Mar Vista.

From 2014 to 2015 we tripled the number of Tinkerers to 150 campers and for 2016 we aim to triple it again. With your support, we will. Tinkering School L.A. will continue to expand our offsite programming, our in-school workshops, teacher trainings, and after school programs. We’ll be returning to the Brentwood School and SMMUSD elementary schools. We hope to go into new schools in 2015-2016, both those that can pay for the program and donor-supported tinkering in low income schools.

Tinkering School L.A. is launching a new program this fall. We’re renovating our multipurpose studio to open as a year-round, seven days a week Tinkering space for drop-in tinkering, classes, and ongoing projects. You’ll be able to attend the new programs with a day pass or with a monthly membership. We also want to provide scholarships and access to our community partners like the Westside Children’s Center, serving the local foster care community, which we can only do with support from donors like you.

Please sponsor our growth. In August 2015, reDiscover received a lead gift from the Goldhirsh-Yellin Foundation towards renovating the studio, but there are still big costs to these expansion plans. Your donation will allow us to bring Tinkering to new audiences, including those who otherwise could not afford our programs.
