Jonathan Markowitz Bijur is a founder of Tinkering School LA, educator, maker, and administrator with over 15 years experience in non-profit management. He has been Executive Director of reDiscover Center since 2014. Jonathan was inspired to join reDiscover out of a deep respect for what it accomplishes facilitating creativity, sustainability, and community in our Westside neighborhoods and a desire to help it reach more kids, support more artists, and divert more materials from the trash stream. His previous board and staff work includes contributions to choirs, museums, libraries, and community centers in Boston and Los Angeles. He is a tinkerer-in-residence at Santa Monica's Virginia Avenue Park Teen Center. Formerly, he was Educational Programs Manager at the MIT Museum, working in the intersection of art, engineering, and K-12 education.
Jonathan is a passionate advocate for STEAM education, the importance of risk-taking in childhood, and open-ended play and exploration at all ages. He tries to apply a tinkering attitude to all aspects of his life, whether that is cooking, playing with his three young children, making toys and furniture, redecorating his home and neighborhood, or in his Unitarian Universalist church community. Jonathan is a graduate of Yale University and holds a Masters of Library Science from Simmons University.
